Agartala, May 22, 2025: Tripura Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma on Thursday announced that a dedicated corridor for wild elephants along National Highway 08 near Teliamura in Khowai district is expected to be completed by next winter. The highway, a key stretch connecting Assam and Agartala, has seen increasing human-elephant conflicts in recent years.

With an estimated population of only 40 wild elephants in the state, authorities are stepping up efforts to minimize human-wildlife conflicts. The elephants are primarily found in the Khowai, Dhalai, and Gomati districts.

“Work on the safe corridor is currently underway. We have coordinated with NHIDCL, and they have assured their cooperation. We expect the corridor to be ready by next winter,” Minister Debbarma said while addressing the media.

The forest department is employing a combination of traditional techniques and modern surveillance tools, along with community involvement, to address the issue of human-elephant conflict more effectively.

In a separate development, the minister also revealed plans to transform Sepahijala Zoo into a world-class facility. He noted a recent success at the zoo where a tigress gave birth to cubs — a development he attributed to the improved environment and infrastructure.

“This shows the progress we have made in enhancing the living conditions at Sepahijala Zoo. We will continue efforts to further develop the zoo for better care of the animals,” Debbarma stated.

Emphasizing the importance of ecological balance, Debbarma highlighted the urgent need for tree plantation and conservation efforts.

“Without trees, there is no survival. If ecological and biological diversity is disturbed, humanity itself will be at risk. We must address habitat encroachment and ensure sustainable coexistence with wildlife,” he added.
