Former Cabinet Minister Kyrmen Shylla has asserted that open-cast coal mining is not a viable option in the East Jaintia Hills, pointing to the region’s distinctive geographical and mining conditions. Addressing media representatives on Monday, Shylla explained that while open-cast mining could be feasible in certain parts of Meghalaya, the terrain and circumstances in East Jaintia Hills make it impractical.
He revealed that a representation is being drafted for submission to the Chief Minister, outlining an alternative method of coal extraction. This proposed model, he clarified, would differ from both the traditional rat-hole mining system and open-cast mining. Once submitted, the State Government is expected to review the proposal and, if deemed suitable, forward it to the Central Government for necessary approvals.
Shylla expressed optimism that the suggested approach would offer a sustainable and workable solution for coal mining in the region, while also addressing long-standing concerns tied to existing practices. He emphasized that the new method aims to balance economic needs with environmental and safety considerations, ensuring that coal extraction in East Jaintia Hills can proceed responsibly.
