Agartala, June 11, 2025: Facing persistent electricity and drinking water issues, angry villagers launched simultaneous road blockades at two separate locations in Sonamura on Wednesday morning causing widespread disruption. The protest driven by mounting frustration over basic service failures stranded commuters and candidates en route to examinations or work.

The first blockade began around 9:30 AM at Tukkar Chowmuhani in Fakiradola Panchayat under the Boxanagar Assembly Constituency along the Sonamura-Boxanagar road. At the same time, residents of the Dhaliai area under Sonamura Nagar Panchayat blocked the Agartala-Sonamura road citing repeated power cuts affecting water supply.

“We have been without electricity for the last five days. The authorities were informed multiple times, but no action has been taken. We are forced to protest now,” said one of the protesting residents at Dhaliai.

The blockade brought vehicular movement to a complete standstill, causing inconvenience to the general public. Reports indicate that several candidates and daily commuters were stuck due to the disruption.

Soon after receiving information about the protests, senior administrative officials and police personnel arrived at both locations. After speaking with the agitators, officials assured them that steps would be taken promptly to address the issues.

“We understand the people’s concerns and have assured them that the matter will be resolved soon,” a police officer at the site said.

Following the assurances from the authorities, the protestors agreed to withdraw the blockade, and traffic movement resumed later in the day. However, locals warned that if the problems persist, they would be compelled to resume protests.
