The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has successfully capped the blowout at its gas well RDS 147A in Sivasagar district on Friday at 11:15 am. The well had been leaking since June 12, prompting a major emergency response.

Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, in a statement posted on his official X handle, said the blowout was brought under control “within the shortest possible time following all the best practices.” He credited ONGC’s Crisis Management Team and international well control experts for safely sealing the well without any injuries, casualties, or fire.

“The curtains have finally come down on the gas well blowout through meticulous planning and concerted efforts,” the minister wrote, while expressing appreciation for the cooperation extended by the Assam government. He thanked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state officials for their “excellent and continuous support to the teams on the ground.”

Chief Minister Sarma also responded on X, thanking the Union Minister for his leadership. “We also acknowledge the tireless efforts put in by Team ONGC and members of our State administration,” he wrote. “But above all, my deepest gratitude to the brave men and women of Sivasagar, especially those residing in the affected areas, for displaying extraordinary levels of perseverance.”

No casualties were reported during the two-week-long crisis, which tested the emergency preparedness of both central and state agencies.
