Japanese Encephalitis (JE) has claimed 10 lives and led to 44 confirmed cases at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in 2025, according to Dr. Achyut Chandra Baishya, Principal and Chief Superintendent of the hospital.
Dr. Baishya stated that the number of JE cases witnessed a sharp increase in June. Of the total cases, 14 are from Kamrup district, 10 from Nalbari, seven from Darrang, and three from Kamrup (Metro).
As per data from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, over 840 deaths due to Japanese Encephalitis were recorded in Assam between 2015 and 2024.
