Tourist taxi services between Assam and Meghalaya have been suspended due to a nationwide ‘chakka jam’ called by central trade unions and national federations. The All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association announced that no tourist taxis would operate from Meghalaya to Guwahati or any other part of Assam in support of the strike.

The strike aims to press several key demands affecting transport workers nationwide, including the withdrawal of the Motor Vehicle Reforms Act 2019, scrapping of the ‘Hit and Run’ clause, halting satellite-based toll collection, and protection of transport workers’ rights. Other demands include an end to excessive fines, simplified pollution certificate rules, and provision of basic amenities for transport workers on highways.

The association has urged taxi drivers to maintain ethical conduct and not overcharge passengers during the disruption. Normal taxi services are expected to resume on Thursday. The association regrets the inconvenience caused and requests the public’s understanding and cooperation during this time.
