Security forces arrested five individuals, including four militants belonging to three banned outfits, from various districts of Manipur for their alleged involvement in extortion activities, police said on Thursday. All arrests were made on Wednesday during intensified operations across the state.

In Bishnupur district, an active cadre of the proscribed People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and his associate were apprehended at Ngaikhong Khunou checkpoint for allegedly demanding money from contractors, businessmen, and the general public in Imphal and Bishnupur districts.

In a separate operation, a member of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG) was arrested from Heirol Part 2 in Thoubal district. He is accused of threatening locals, extorting money, and recruiting new cadres.

Another active militant from the outlawed PREPAK (Pro) was arrested from his residence in Taothong Khunou, Imphal West district. He was also allegedly involved in extortion-related activities. Meanwhile, a second KCP (PWG) cadre was nabbed from Kairang Chingya in Imphal East district.

In parallel operations, security forces recovered 26 firearms, nine explosives, and other ammunition from Churachandpur and Thoubal districts.

Security operations have been intensified across the state in response to the ongoing ethnic violence that began two years ago. The Centre imposed President’s Rule in Manipur on February 13 following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, with the state assembly currently under suspended animation.
