A new species of snake, named Smithophis laptofasciatus, has been discovered by scientists from the Zoology Department of Mizoram University during recent herpetological research.

The identification of the species was confirmed through detailed analysis of its scale patterns, physical features, and DNA, according to Professor H T Lalremsanga, Head of the Zoology Department.

The research findings were published on August 5 in Taprobanica: The Journal of Asian Biodiversity, an international journal dedicated to studies on Asian biodiversity.
