Agartala, August 18, 2025: A nine-year-old girl named Asmi Majumdar died on Sunday night after allegedly being denied timely treatment at Baikhora Primary Health Center under South Tripura District. Her family has blamed the hospital authorities and duty doctor Randeep Bhowmik for negligence.
According to the family, Asmi, daughter of Sanjib Majumdar of Charakbai Madhyapara, was taken to the Baikhora Primary Health Center around 10 pm after being bitten by a poisonous creature. “We told the doctor that something poisonous had bitten her leg, but instead of admitting her, he prescribed a WBCT blood test, which the hospital does not even have facilities for,” said a grieving family member.
The family alleged that Dr. Bhowmik administered three injections and sent the girl home without transferring her to a higher hospital. “When her condition worsened and her body color started changing, we rushed her back. Only then was she referred to Shantirbazar District Hospital,” the father said.
Doctors at Santirbazar confirmed traces of poison in her blood and referred her to GB Hospital. However, Asmi collapsed on the way and was declared dead soon after.
Villagers and family members further alleged that Baikhora Primary Health Center has been functioning in an extremely unhygienic condition since Dr. Bhowmik took charge. “The hospital is dirty, and nurses misbehave with patients,” locals claimed. They also accused Chief Medical Officer Jyotirmoy Das of neglecting his duty.
