Zubeen Garg, Assam’s renowned singer and musician, died from drowning while swimming off Singapore’s St John’s Island, according to fresh reports on Thursday. Earlier reports suggesting he died during scuba diving have been clarified.
The 52-year-old artist was in Singapore on September 19 to participate in the North East India Festival and to mark 60 years of India-Singapore diplomatic relations. The Straits Times reported that the Singapore Police Force shared the autopsy findings with the Indian High Commission, confirming drowning as the cause of death. Authorities have ruled out foul play.
Reports indicate Garg was seen entering the sea wearing a life jacket, which he later removed before taking another swim. He was found unconscious and rushed to Singapore General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead the same day. Singapore police have urged the public not to share videos related to the incident.
Meanwhile, Assam Police have intensified their investigation. On Wednesday, Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma and festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta were arrested in Delhi and remanded to 14 days’ police custody by a Guwahati court. They face charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, conspiracy, and causing death by negligence.
In Jorhat, Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, welcomed the arrests and expressed confidence in the Special Investigation Team set up by the Assam government. She stated that the family and fans are awaiting clarity on the circumstances surrounding his death.
