Governor Vijay Kumar Singh visited Sairang railway station on Wednesday to inspect infrastructure and meet senior railway officials, Raj Bhavan officials confirmed on Thursday.

During the visit, the Governor lauded the linking of Aizawl with the Indian Railways network — the first for the state — describing it as a historic step that will enhance connectivity with major Indian cities. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards of safety, hygiene, and passenger convenience, and urged the Northeast Frontier Railway to continue strengthening infrastructure and operational efficiency.

Deputy Chief Engineer Harjimal Meena briefed the Governor on the station’s technical features, while Area Manager (Badarpur) Virendra Kumar Meena shared operational updates and future plans.

The review follows the inauguration of the Rs 8,071 crore Bairabi-Sairang railway line by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13. The 51.38 km project, considered one of the most challenging railway ventures in India, includes 45 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and 87 minor bridges.

Bridge No. 144 near Sairang, at 114 metres, is India’s tallest pier railway bridge, 42 metres taller than the Qutub Minar. The route includes five stations: Bairabi, Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang.

On the inauguration day, Modi also flagged off Mizoram’s first Rajdhani Express to Delhi, along with two express services connecting Aizawl to Guwahati and Kolkata.
