Agartala, November 21, 2025: Tripura’s Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Friday highlighted the vital importance of precise measurement in commercial transactions to protect consumer rights and maintain product quality.
Speaking at a discussion programme on “Laws of Legal Metrology” organised by the Legal Metrology wing of the department at a private hotel here in Agartala, Chowdhury said that accuracy in measurement forms the foundation of fair trade practices and transparency in the marketplace. He called for increased awareness among both consumers and traders to curb malpractice and strengthen confidence in the trading system.
The minister noted that legal metrology ensures that weighing and measuring devices used in business comply with approved standards and government regulations. He urged people to remain vigilant about correct weight and measurement in their daily purchases to prevent exploitation.
The event also highlighted recent amendments in legal metrology laws, regulatory updates, and future initiatives planned by the central government to improve transparency and governance in the sector. Chowdhury emphasized that consumer awareness combined with ethical business conduct is essential for sustainable economic growth at both state and national levels.
The programme was attended by Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department Secretary Debapriya Bardhan, Director of the Union Department of Consumer Affairs and Legal Metrology Ashutosh Agarwal, Indian Institute of Legal Metrology Director Dr Rajeshwar Kumar, sub-divisional magistrates, representatives from the Petroleum Dealers’ Association, Tripura Natural Gas Corporation Limited (TNGCL), fair price shop associations, hotel associations, business bodies, and officials of the Legal Metrology wing.
The session was moderated by Sumit Lodh, Director of the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department.
