Itanagar, Nov 24: Yak Churpi, the traditional highland cheese of Arunachal Pradesh, has been awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, marking a significant step in promoting the state’s cultural and culinary identity. Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein announced the development on X, stating that the recognition is a proud moment for mountain communities whose lives and livelihoods are closely linked to yak rearing and the Himalayan ecosystem.

Officials said Yak Churpi, known for its rich texture, high nutritional content, and long shelf life, has been a staple food for generations in the high-altitude regions of Tawang and West Kameng. Mein noted that the cheese has played a vital role in sustaining families in remote and climate-vulnerable areas with limited agricultural scope.

Registered under GI (Reg No. 809), the product is expected to benefit from enhanced market potential and greater cultural visibility. The deputy chief minister said the GI status will protect traditional processing practices, assure buyers of authenticity, and help local producers connect with niche and premium markets.

Prepared from locally sourced yak milk using age-old techniques maintained by pastoral households, Yak Churpi symbolizes resilience and the deep-rooted relationship between communities and the highland environment. Experts said the GI tag will help prevent imitation, strengthen the rural economy, support yak-herding families, promote tourism, and encourage value-added product development.

Officials added that the recognition contributes to Arunachal Pradesh’s expanding list of culturally significant products and aligns with efforts toward sustainable development in the high-altitude districts.
