Agartala, December 5, 2025: The Pradesh Congress has launched a sharp attack on the Modi government’s economic policies, privatization drive, and a series of upcoming legislations including the Labour Code, Seed Bill 2025, and Electricity Bill 2025.
At a press conference today, Pradesh Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty alleged that the Centre is “consistently weakening public interest and democratic structures to safeguard corporate interests.”
The Congress party accused the government of encouraging “pro-government propaganda and divisive politics” since 2014, thereby undermining democratic values. It claimed that the privatization of state-owned enterprises, corporate-friendly financial decisions, and anti-labour measures have pushed large sections of the population into economic distress. According to the party, 204,238 companies have shut down in the past five years, while the number of “fake and shell companies” has risen alarmingly, with many firms allegedly closing operations without paying workers’ dues. Congress further pointed to declining industrial output, contraction in the power sector, and consumer slowdown, arguing that the government’s claims of GDP growth are “misleading and unrealistic.”
Congress warned that the new Labour Code would erode the rights of nearly 90% of workers. The party alleged that the Seed Bill 2025 would hand over farmers’ rights to corporations, creating corporate dominance over seed pricing and markets. It also said that the Electricity Bill 2025, by removing cross-subsidies, would sharply increase electricity costs for rural households and farmers.
The party argued that if implemented, these bills would weaken state control and place the country’s electricity and agricultural systems under corporate influence.
Congress also raised concerns about the Sanchar Saathi project, questioning the protection of personal data. While the government withdrew its directive under public pressure, the party demanded a “clear, legally amended notification” to safeguard citizens’ privacy.
In response, the Pradesh Congress announced a statewide agitation on December 8, including protest marches and symbolic burning of the draft Seed Bill and Electricity Bill. The party said the movement will be extended nationwide in phases, with the stated aim of defending public interest.
