Agartala, December 29, 2025: Public anger over the murder of Tripura student Anjel Chakma escalated on Monday after Tipra Motha Party founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma condemned the Uttarakhand government’s Rs 25,000 reward for tracing the main accused, calling it a gross undervaluation of a young life.

Voicing strong displeasure, Pradyot announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh from his personal funds for any credible information that results in the arrest of the prime suspect. He maintained that the official reward undermined the seriousness of the crime and the grief of the victim’s family.

Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura’s Unakoti district, was assaulted in Dehradun on December 9 after he allegedly protested against racial slurs directed at his younger brother, Michael Chakma. After battling for his life for more than two weeks, Anjel succumbed to his injuries.

Pradyot said he was stunned to learn that the Uttarakhand government had fixed the reward amount at Rs 25,000. He questioned the state’s sensitivity in handling the case, calling the figure “shameful” and inadequate for a crime of such gravity.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage across the Northeast, intensifying concerns about racial discrimination and the safety of students from the region studying in other states. Police have arrested several suspects, while the main accused is believed to have fled the country.
