Agartala, January 10, 2026: Unakoti district in Tripura witnessed a day of terror on Saturday as Fatikroy’s Saydarpur–Shimultala area descended into chaos. Defying the rule of law, armed miscreants unleashed violence, turning the locality into a virtual battlefield. From morning onwards, houses, shops, and vehicles were set ablaze, widespread vandalism followed, and panic gripped residents.

Locals informed that a group of miscreants carried out a planned attack. A timber shop was reduced to ashes, while haystacks and several homes were torched. Multiple houses and vehicles were vandalized, leaving several innocent residents injured in the clashes.

As the situation spiraled out of control, a massive police contingent was rushed to the spot. Personnel from TSR, CRPF, and Assam Rifles cordoned off the area. To disperse crowds, police resorted to mild baton charges, while drones were deployed for strict surveillance.

Unakoti District Magistrate Dr. Tamal Majumdar and Acting Superintendent of Police Avinash Rai visited the site. Authorities imposed Section 163 and declared curfew across the area. To prevent further escalation, mobile internet services in Unakoti district were suspended for 48 hours.

Speaking to reporters, SP Avinash Rai said: “A group of miscreants entered the area and deliberately set fire. Security forces were immediately deployed to bring the situation under control. Ten people have already been arrested, and strict action is being taken against those involved.”

Local sources revealed that the violence stemmed from a dispute over Puja donations. When a driver refused to pay the demanded contribution, an argument broke out, quickly escalating into arson, assault, and group clashes.

Authorities claim the situation is now under control, though tension still prevails. Police patrols have been intensified, and officials warned against attempts to give the incident a communal color. “Any effort to disturb peace will be dealt with firmly,” the administration stated.

The incident raises troubling questions: How long will extortion in the name of Puja donations continue unchecked? Is public safety so easily compromised? The Fatikroy violence has once again underscored the urgent need for stronger, exemplary action against lawless elements to restore peace and normalcy.
