Gangtok, Janu 28: Sikkim Krantikari Morcha MP Indra Hang Subba on Tuesday called for a special discussion in Parliament on the impact of climate change, with particular focus on its effects on the Himalayan and glacial ecosystems.
Speaking at an all-party meeting in New Delhi, Subba underscored the urgency of addressing climate-related challenges faced by Himalayan states, including increasing drinking water shortages and recurring incidents of flash floods. A statement issued by his office said he stressed the need for the matter to be debated on the floor of the House.
The MP also proposed the formation of a standing committee comprising Members of Parliament from Himalayan states to examine region-specific issues and recommend policy measures.
Additionally, Subba reiterated the Sikkim government’s long-standing demand for the inclusion of 12 left-out communities in the Scheduled Tribes list, describing their exclusion as a historical injustice that requires immediate correction.
