Agartala, February 11, 2026: In a significant operation against the illegal trafficking of contraband substances, Tripura Police, in joint coordination with the Government Railway Police Station (GRPS) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF), recovered a large quantity of banned cough syrup valued at more than ₹80 lakh from Agartala Railway Station. One person has been detained for questioning in connection with the case.

According to police sources, the seizure took place late at night during a routine examination of a parcel wagon attached to the Garib Rath Express, which had reached the station earlier in the day. During inspection, officials reportedly noticed a strong and suspicious odor emanating from the wagon, leading them to conduct a thorough search of the consignment.

Upon detailed verification, security personnel recovered 2,998 bottles of Eskuf cough syrup concealed inside 10 jute bags. The estimated market value of the seized consignment is stated to be over ₹80 lakh. Preliminary findings indicate that the parcel was dispatched from Kolkata.

The detained individual has been identified as Rakesh Hossain (44), a resident of Rajnagar area under West Agartala Police Station. During preliminary interrogation, he informed authorities that he is linked to a courier service and had arrived at the station to collect the parcel.

Police officials confirmed that a case has been registered and further legal action is being initiated. An in-depth investigation is underway to ascertain the origin and intended destination of the consignment and to determine whether an organized smuggling network is operating behind the illegal transportation of the banned substance.
