Guwahati, Mar 12: Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, on Thursday said that three to four FIRs have been registered against senior Indian National Congress leader Pawan Khera over allegations that he attempted to contact militant groups in the state to influence election outcomes.

Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Sarma said an investigation is underway into the cases. He stated that the FIRs relate to alleged attempts to reach out to certain militant organisations in Assam ahead of the elections.

The statement by the chief minister came a day after Khera, who serves as the Media and Communications Chairman of the All India Congress Committee, alleged that Sarma could face imprisonment after the elections due to alleged corruption.

Responding to those remarks, Sarma said the ongoing investigations would determine the outcome of the cases and added that the developments would become clear after the elections.

There was no immediate response from Khera to Sarma’s latest remarks.

On Wednesday, Khera had accused the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Assam of prioritising personal and family interests. He also expressed confidence that the Congress and its allies would form the next government in the state under the leadership of Gaurav Gogoi.

Elections to the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly are scheduled to be held in April. The polls will be the first in the state following the delimitation exercise carried out in 2023.
