Guwahati, March 16: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) on Monday announced its candidates for two assembly constituencies in Assam ahead of the April 9 polls.

State CPI(M) secretary Suprakash Talukdar said the party will contest the Bhawanipur-Sorbhog and Goreswar constituencies as part of the Congress-led opposition alliance.

Sitting MLA Manoranjan Talukdar will contest from the Bhawanipur-Sorbhog constituency. The seat was renamed and redrawn following the 2023 delimitation exercise. The party has nominated Bupu Ram Boro as its candidate from Goreswar, which is located in the Bodoland Territorial Region.

Talukdar said the party is part of a broader opposition alliance in the state that includes the Indian National Congress, Assam Jatiya Parishad, All Party Hill Leaders Conference, and Communist Party of India (Marxist‑Leninist) Liberation.

In the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly, the Bharatiya Janata Party holds 64 seats. Its allies include the Asom Gana Parishad with nine seats, United People’s Party Liberal with seven seats, and the Bodoland People’s Front with three seats.

Among opposition parties, the Congress has 26 seats, the All India United Democratic Front has 15 seats, CPI(M) has one seat, and there is one Independent member in the Assembly.
