Agartala, March 18, 2026: The Bharatiya Janata Party in Tripura has formally requested the State Election Commission to reschedule the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, citing a clash with the culturally significant Garia Puja.
In a letter dated March 17, BJP State Executive Committee General Secretary Bipin Debbarma urged the State Election Commissioner to reconsider the polling date of April 13, 2026, as it coincides with Garia Puja—one of the most important traditional festivals of the indigenous communities in the state.
The letter emphasized that Garia Puja holds deep cultural and religious importance, during which people actively participate in rituals, festivities, and community gatherings. Conducting elections on the same day, the party argued, may hinder voter participation and lead to lower turnout, especially among tribal populations.
Highlighting the need for maximum electoral participation, the BJP appealed to the Commission to shift the polling date to a more suitable day that does not conflict with the festival. The party stated that such a move would ensure a more inclusive and smooth democratic process.
The memorandum also expressed confidence that the Election Commission would take the matter into consideration and act in the larger interest of the people of Tripura.
