Guwahati, March 18, 2026: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday announced that the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) has been excluded from the BJP-led alliance ahead of the state assembly elections, while the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) will continue as a partner.

The UPPL and BPF are political rivals in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), an autonomous region under the Sixth Schedule that elects 15 members to the Assam Legislative Assembly. Sarma said seat-sharing arrangements among the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and BPF have been finalized, with constituency-wise details expected to be released later following a parliamentary meeting.

“The UPPL will contest 15 seats independently, and we wish them the best. Our alliance is with BPF,” Sarma told reporters in New Delhi.

Under the agreement, AGP has been allotted 26 seats, the same number it contested in the 2021 elections, while BPF has secured 11 seats.

Elections to the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly are scheduled for April 9, with counting of votes set for May 4.

UPPL had been part of the BJP-led coalition for the past five years and held cabinet positions in the state government. BPF joined the alliance later and has previously allied with different parties, including the Congress before 2016.

In the BTC, BPF held power from 2005 until UPPL formed the council in 2020. BPF regained control in the 2025 BTC elections.

As per the current composition of the Assam Assembly, BJP holds 64 seats, AGP has 9, UPPL 7, and BPF 3. The opposition includes Indian National Congress with 26 seats, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) with 15, Communist Party of India (Marxist) with 1 seat, and one Independent member.

No candidates have been announced by the alliance so far.
