Jorhat, March 23: Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi filed his nomination papers from the Jorhat assembly constituency on Monday, marking his first electoral contest in the state assembly elections.
Ahead of filing, Gogoi visited religious sites representing different communities and later led a three-hour rally from Jorhat Stadium to the District Commissioner’s office, which was attended by a large crowd.
He also paid respects at his family home in Nazir Ali, offering prayers before the portrait of his late father, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
Gogoi will face BJP veteran Hitendranath Goswami, the sitting MLA who has held the Jorhat seat for five terms—three consecutively as an AGP candidate since 1991 and twice as a BJP representative since 2016.
Monday marked the last day for filing nominations. The scrutiny of nominations is scheduled for March 24, with the withdrawal deadline on March 26. Polling for the 126-member Assam Assembly is scheduled for April 9, with results to be announced on May 4.
