Agartala, March 31, 2026: In a significant healthcare intervention under the National Health Mission, four children in Tripura suffering from congenital hearing impairment have received a new lease of life through cochlear implant surgeries carried out under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram.

The beneficiaries — Sayin Alam Rihan (5) from Melaghar, Ayushi Nandi (2.5) from Tepania in Udaipur, Alia Debbarma (4) from Mandai and Sanvi Nandi (3) from Pratapgarh — had been facing hearing difficulties since birth, affecting the normal development of their speech and auditory abilities.

Officials said the children were identified during routine health screening conducted by RBSK mobile health teams. Following preliminary detection, they were referred to the District Early Intervention Centre (DEIC), where detailed diagnostic examinations confirmed congenital hearing loss and recommended cochlear implant surgery.

The surgeries were successfully conducted at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital. The high-cost treatment was fully funded under the NHM, sparing the families from major financial hardship.

Health officials said the implants are expected to gradually improve the children’s hearing and speech capabilities, allowing them to continue education in a regular environment and participate more fully in social life.

The initiative is being seen as an important step by NHM Tripura toward early detection of childhood disorders and timely specialised medical intervention, reinforcing child healthcare delivery across the state.
