Guwahati, Mar 31: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday challenged state Congress president and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi to disclose details of his alleged properties in Pakistan and the United Kingdom, urging him to submit the information to the Election Commission.
Speaking at the BJP’s manifesto launch in Guwahati, Sarma alleged that Gogoi had concealed his wife’s income and bank account in Pakistan, along with properties in Pakistan and London held in her name. He also referred to claims by Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi that Gaurav Gogoi owns property in the United States.
Sarma asked Gogoi to either include these details in his election affidavit or allow four neutral journalists to verify his wife’s Pakistani bank transactions. “If no property exists, let them examine the accounts and confirm if I am lying,” he said.
The Chief Minister also suggested that additional allegations, including Gogoi’s recent appearance on a Pakistani television program as an NGO visitor, contradicting his claim of a private trip, could be revealed after the polls. Sarma has previously alleged links between Gogoi, his British wife Elizabeth Clare Gogoi, and Pakistan’s ISI, and had formed a Special Investigation Team to probe the matter.
On Congress defections to the BJP, Sarma defended the inclusion of Assamese leaders in the party, questioning why the opposition has been unable to retain them.
