Siikhe Lake has recorded the presence of more than 100 migratory birds belonging to nine species over the past week, according to recent observations.
The species documented include Mallard Duck, Northern Shoveler, Ferruginous Duck, Eurasian Wigeon, Tufted Duck, Gadwall, Northern Pintail, Garganey, and Great Crested Grebe. Additional species are expected to arrive in the coming weeks as the migration season progresses.
Monitoring of bird migration and waterbird population counts has been carried out since 2019 by a team from Ziro Birds Walk. The activity takes place during the peak migration period from November to May, with support from the Siikhe Multipurpose Society, which manages the lake.
Officials said the recent observations indicate the lake’s continued role as a habitat for migratory birds and its importance for avian diversity in the region.
Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, in a statement on Friday, noted the recent sightings at Siikhe Lake and referred to the need for conservation of natural habitats and biodiversity in the state.
