Guwahati, April 6: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday launched a scathing attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling him the “most corrupt CM in India” and vowing legal action if the Congress forms the next government in the state.
Addressing rallies in Biswanath, Golaghat, and Kamrup districts, Gandhi said Sarma, along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, had created a “land ATM” to transfer public land to industrialists. He alleged that three major corporate houses had been handed 98,400 bighas of land in Assam.
“Let him speak for some more days. After that, the Congress will form a government in Assam, and legal action will follow even if he asks for forgiveness. The Congress government will put him in jail for 10–15 years,” Gandhi said.
He accused the BJP of spreading hatred and claimed that corruption charges against Sarma’s family would also be investigated. Gandhi linked the Congress’s philosophy to that of musician Zubeen Garg, saying both sought to unite Assam through love rather than division.
The Congress leader also criticized the BJP for failing to raise tea garden workers’ daily wages to ₹350 as promised, and accused the party of making another “false promise” of ₹500. He pledged that six communities long demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status would be granted recognition under a Congress government.
Unveiling the party’s “five guarantees,” Gandhi promised monthly transfers to women, ₹25 lakh cashless health insurance for all families, permanent land pattas for 10 lakh indigenous people, ₹1,250 monthly support for senior citizens, and a dedicated department for elderly welfare. He also pledged justice for Zubeen Garg within 100 days of forming government.
