Gangtok, Apr 13: All 114 drivers of tourist and private vehicles stranded in Lachen in North Sikkim following a road breach have been safely rescued, officials said on Monday.
The evacuation was conducted on Sunday through an alternate route via Dongkya La pass, covering Zero Point, Yumthang, Lachung, and further towards Mangan and Gangtok.
The drivers were stranded after a road breach occurred on April 5 at Taram Chu along the Chungthang-Lachen road. Prior to this, on April 9, as many as 1,321 tourists traveling in these vehicles were rescued using a temporary footbridge set up at the breach site.
Officials added that a few remaining drivers and vehicles are expected to be evacuated over the next few days, depending on weather conditions.
