Shillong, April 17: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday announced the formal inclusion of Khasi and Garo as official state languages alongside English, during a meeting with the A’chik Literary Society in Tura.
Sangma described the move as a strategic step toward strengthening the long-standing demand for the inclusion of Khasi and Garo in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. While acknowledging that full administrative and educational integration will take time, he revealed plans to introduce their use in legislative proceedings, potentially as early as the next Autumn Session in the new Assembly building.
The Chief Minister sought the expertise of literary groups to draft frameworks for implementation and praised the society’s role in preserving cultural heritage. Members of the A’chik Literary Society reaffirmed their commitment to the continued development of the Garo language.
