The Manipur Home Department has issued a comprehensive advisory to media houses across the State, urging responsible reporting and strict adherence to established journalistic norms in view of the prevailing law and order situation.
The advisory highlights growing concerns over the circulation of unverified news, including press releases and announcements attributed to banned or unauthorized organizations. It noted that such reporting, when carried out without proper verification, can create panic, spread misinformation, and potentially incite unrest among the public.
Citing the “Norms of Journalistic Conduct” laid down by the Press Council of India, the government has directed all media outlets, editors, and journalists to exercise due diligence in verifying information, particularly content related to bandhs, threats, or directives issued by unlawful groups. It has also prohibited the publication or dissemination of press releases from banned or unrecognized organizations unless responsibly contextualized in public interest.
The advisory further calls on media houses to avoid sensational or provocative reporting that could disrupt communal harmony, and to refrain from spreading unverified or speculative information that may trigger public panic. It also strictly bars any form of reporting that glorifies unlawful activities or anti-social elements.
Emphasising ethical journalism, the Home Department warned against misuse of media platforms for coercion or dissemination of unlawful content, stating that such actions would invite legal consequences. Media organisations have also been urged to act as responsible stakeholders in maintaining public order, peace, and stability in the State.
The order, issued with the approval of the competent authority, has come into immediate effect, with authorities cautioning that any violation will be dealt with under relevant laws.
