The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, in collaboration with Samagra Shiksha Manipur, has successfully concluded a five-day online Teachers’ Training Programme on Oral Health Promotion, covering participants from all 16 districts of the state.
The programme, organised by the Department of Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Dental College, RIMS, was held as part of the World Oral Health Day celebrations and the Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry’s “Nurture, Educate, Serve & Treat” initiative. It aimed to equip teachers with essential knowledge and practical skills to promote preventive oral healthcare among schoolchildren.
Sessions were conducted under the supervision of Associate Professor and Head Dr. Wairokpam Bhoomika Devi, along with Dr. Rajkumari Sarada Devi, Dr. Ratna Yumkham, and Dr. Laleena Rajkumari. Key topics included the importance of primary dentition, early detection and prevention of dental caries and gum diseases, identification of malocclusion, and addressing harmful oral habits. Teachers were also trained in proper brushing techniques and encouraged to integrate oral health awareness into school activities, maintain student oral health records, and involve parents for sustained care.
A key highlight of the programme was the introduction of the “Oral Health Ambassador” initiative, promoting a peer-led approach where trained teachers mentor students to spread awareness within schools. Interactive sessions, including assessments and experience-sharing, further enhanced participation and learning outcomes.
Dr. Bhoomika Devi emphasised that empowering teachers plays a crucial role in improving children’s oral health through early intervention and preventive care, while the initiative reflects a collective effort to integrate oral health promotion into the education system.
