Shillong, May 20: Police in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills have arrested a man from Williamnagar for allegedly uploading obscene material on social media platforms. Authorities stated that the accused had been habitually sharing sexually explicit content targeting women, using vulgar language through his Facebook account and YouTube channel.
A case has been registered at Williamnagar Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, 2000. Superintendent of Police S.A. Rynjah confirmed that recent uploads on the accused’s Facebook account were found to be obscene, prompting immediate action.
Rynjah emphasized that transmitting or publishing sexually explicit material online constitutes a cognisable offence. He further urged victims or aggrieved persons to report such incidents to the police through proper channels, adding that the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal is available for lodging complaints related to online obscenity, child sexual abuse material, and cyber blackmail.
