Guwahati, May 25: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday asserted that the introduction of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the state assembly will mark a significant step toward a formal and recorded debate on its necessity. He emphasized that such a discussion would not only highlight the importance of the legislation but also align with the vision set forth by the nation’s founding fathers.

Sarma, in a post on X, stated that the presentation of the Uniform Civil Code 2026 Bill in the Assam Vidhan Sabha creates an opportunity for legislators to deliberate on why the UCC is essential at this juncture. He maintained that the measure would help realize the constitutional path envisaged during the country’s formative years.

The Chief Minister underscored that the tabling of the Bill is more than a procedural move, describing it as a step toward ensuring clarity and transparency in the debate over uniformity in civil laws. He reiterated that the initiative reflects a broader commitment to strengthening the legal framework in Assam while remaining consistent with the principles laid down by the architects of independent India.
