Guwahati, May 25: The Assam government has taken a decisive step toward enhancing women’s representation in politics by moving a resolution in the Assembly to implement one-third reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures. The proposal follows the completion of the delimitation process, which sets the stage for structural changes in electoral constituencies.
Women and Child Welfare Minister Ajanta Neog presented the resolution during the third day of the Assembly’s first session, urging members to extend unanimous support. She underscored that the measure was vital to strengthen women’s empowerment and ensure their holistic development.
The resolution stated that “in order to honour women’s power and ensure the holistic development and empowerment of women, one-third reservation for women in the Parliament of the country and in all Legislative Assemblies should be implemented with immediate effect, after completing the process of delimitation.”
This move signals Assam’s commitment to advancing gender equality in political institutions and could mark a pivotal moment in the broader national discourse on women’s representation.
