The Meghalaya Cabinet on May 27 approved an amendment to the Meghalaya Forest Authority Act, 1991, designed to strengthen coordination between the State Forest Department and the Autonomous District Councils in matters of forest protection and management.
The amendment is intended to improve institutional collaboration and enhance the functioning of the Meghalaya Forest Authority, enabling more effective conservation and governance of forest resources across the state.
According to the government, the administrative changes will allow the Authority to utilise funds for routine operations, including coordination, monitoring, and collaborative activities related to forest management.
Officials emphasised that the measure reflects the state’s commitment to reinforcing institutional mechanisms for sustainable forest governance and ensuring that conservation priorities are integrated into administrative practice.
