Agartala, June 02, 2026: With the objective of preserving a healthy, pollution-free environment and protecting humanity from the growing threats posed by climate change, Tripura Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Monday formally launched the month-long ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ (Save the Fields Campaign). The campaign will continue across the state from June 1 to June 30.
The Minister inaugurated the campaign after opening two newly constructed Agricultural Development Research and Training Centres equipped with IT facilities at Bharat Chandra Nagar and Rajnagar in South Tripura district, along with the new office building of the Deputy Director of Agriculture at Belonia.
Addressing the gathering, Nath said the world is witnessing rapid climatic changes, with average temperatures steadily increasing. He attributed the phenomenon to factors such as air and water pollution, declining soil organic carbon content, and the excessive use of chemical fertilizers, adding that Tripura is not immune to these challenges.
He stated that the Central Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has launched the nationwide ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ from June 1 to June 15, and the initiative is being implemented extensively in Tripura. The campaign aims to create awareness about natural farming down to the Gram Panchayat level and encourage greater oilseed production to reduce dependence on imported edible oils.
Highlighting the state’s progress in sustainable agriculture, the Minister informed that natural farming is currently being practiced on 5,550 hectares of land by 13,875 farmers. The government has set a target to bring an additional 11,250 hectares under natural farming during the current year, taking the total coverage to 16,800 hectares by year-end.
Nath appealed to public representatives to dedicate at least 25 percent of their cultivable land to natural farming to inspire other farmers to adopt the practice. He also stressed the need to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and promote organic alternatives such as compost, cow-dung manure, leaf manure and bio-fertilizers.
The Minister further revealed that organic farming is presently being carried out on 26,661 hectares of land across Tripura by 26,884 farmers.
Emphasizing the long-term vision of the state government, Nath said an Agricultural Roadmap up to 2047 is being prepared to enhance farmers’ income through scientific farming methods and modern technologies. He also underscored the importance of the Farmer Registry initiative, stating that the creation of a Unique Farmer ID would ensure seamless delivery of benefits under various government schemes.
According to the Minister, 63,784 farmers have already been registered under the Farmer Registry in Tripura, and efforts are being intensified to bring all remaining farmers under the system at the earliest. He reiterated that natural farming offers higher returns at lower costs while safeguarding both human health and the environment, making it a key component of the state’s agricultural future.
