According to court sources, Special Judge of the NDPS Court convicted Dipankar Das, a resident of Lalchhara under Khowai Police Station, under Section 21(b) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The court ordered him to undergo five years of rigorous imprisonment and pay a fine of ₹50,000. In default of payment, he will have to serve an additional one year of rigorous imprisonment.

Police sources said the case was registered at Khowai Police Station on December 17, 2023, under Sections 21(b), 25 and 29 of the NDPS Act after narcotic substances were recovered from the accused. Sub-Inspector Rajendra Riang lodged the complaint.

The investigation was later entrusted to Sub-Inspector Ranjit Sarkar, who completed the probe and submitted the charge sheet before the court on March 31, 2024.

During the trial, the court examined witnesses and scrutinized documentary and material evidence. After completion of the judicial proceedings, the accused was found guilty on June 2, while the sentence was pronounced on Friday.

Law enforcement officials described the verdict as a major success in the ongoing crackdown against drug trafficking and narcotics-related offences in the state.
