Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to attend the signing of a landmark tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Centre and the governments of Assam and Nagaland on Thursday evening. The agreement, set to be formalized at the Ministry of Home Affairs office in New Delhi around 6:30 pm, will focus on the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas along the Assam-Nagaland border.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, and senior officials from both states are expected to be present at the ceremony.
The MoU is designed to unlock the hydrocarbon potential of the resource-rich border areas, which have long remained underutilized due to inter-state boundary disputes. Officials emphasized that the initiative represents a significant step toward regional cooperation, economic development, and energy security in the Northeast.
The agreement will establish frameworks for joint exploration, revenue sharing, and law and order management during operations, while also involving public and private energy companies to generate employment and strengthen infrastructure.
The Centre has consistently encouraged northeastern states to harness their natural resources responsibly, with environmental safeguards and local participation.
This collaboration is seen not only as a confidence-building measure between Assam and Nagaland but also as a demonstration of cooperative federalism. With energy demand rising and the government prioritizing domestic production, the agreement carries strategic importance for India’s long-term energy roadmap.
The presence of Amit Shah underscores the national significance of the pact, which is expected to signal a united approach toward stability and development in the region.
