Member of Parliament from Sikkim, Indra Hang Subba, met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at Kartavya Bhawan in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss matters of strategic and developmental importance for the Himalayan state.
During the meeting, Subba drew attention to the persistent connectivity challenges in North Sikkim, particularly along routes leading to India’s border areas. He explained that adverse weather, difficult terrain, and frequent disruptions continue to hinder reliable road access, stressing the need for robust all-weather infrastructure to support both national security and local development. He emphasized that strengthening connectivity in these sensitive regions is vital for the movement of security forces, the welfare of local communities, and the overall growth of the state.
The MP also raised several long-pending issues affecting Sikkim. He urged the Centre to expedite the inclusion of 12 left-out communities in the Scheduled Tribe list, a demand rooted in ensuring social justice and equal opportunities. Additionally, he highlighted the unresolved matter of seat reservation for the Limboo and Tamang Scheduled Tribes in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, despite their constitutional recognition as Scheduled Tribes.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh assured Subba that the concerns would be given due consideration. Expressing optimism, Subba said he was confident that the Government of India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, remains committed to addressing the developmental aspirations and constitutional concerns of Sikkim while reinforcing its strategic infrastructure and integration with the nation.
