Food safety officials in Meghalaya seized a consignment of pointed gourds in Shillong on Friday after initial checks suggested the possible use of artificial colouring agents. Deputy Commissioner of Food Safety D B S Mukhim confirmed that samples were collected during a surprise inspection and have been sent to a laboratory for detailed analysis.
The operation followed reports from Assam earlier in the week, where concerns were raised about vegetables being treated with artificial colours. Officials suspect that the gourds may have been artificially enhanced to appear fresher and more appealing, but stressed that only laboratory results will determine the extent of contamination.
Authorities stated that strict measures under the Food Safety and Standards Act would be enforced if the samples are found to be adulterated. Consumers have been urged to remain cautious, wash vegetables thoroughly before consumption, and expect continued inspections across markets in the state to safeguard public health.
