The United Democratic Party (UDP) has recommended the state government to implement a system adopted by Mizoram administration to alleviate the traffic congestion in Shillong.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the General Secretary of UDP Shillong – Allantry F Dkhar said, “It is my humble suggestion that if we implement a system, currently being operational in the capital town of Mizoram, Aizawl, this problem that we are facing can be suitably addressed.”
The UDP leader – Dkhar suggested that only private vehicles with numbers ending in 0 and 1 can ply on Mondays, Tuesday 2 and 3, Wednesday 4 and 5, Thursday 6 and 7 and open to all on weekends.
“Prior to implementation of the concerned system, there should be a focus on expanding the public transit options to meet the demands, that might arise thereof. It would also be advisable to strictly enforce the aforementioned system,” Dkhar said.
He claimed that the city’s ever-increasing traffic congestion are proving to be a significant obstacle for residents.
