Tripura CM Dr Manik Saha Seek NSS Volunteers’ Support In Making ‘Drug-Free’ State

Agartala, November 02, 2022: Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Wednesday reiterated that the state government had initiated measures to attain the desired goal of making Tripura a ‘Drug-Free’ state. In this regard, he asked the NSS volunteers to support the government in achieving this target.

The ’54th NSS Day’ and seminar on ‘Nesha Mukt Tripura’ have been organized by the Tripura State NSS Cell under the YAS department in collaboration with National Mental Health Programme (NMHP) on Wednesday morning at the premises of Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan here in Agartala city.

Addressing the event, CM Dr Saha said that the main objective of the NSS is to develop one’s personality through social service. Apart from this, active resistance against all the dark sides of the society is also one of the responsibilities and duties of NSS volunteers.

He said that the NSS was started in 1969 on the occasion of the birth centenary of the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi. NSS started its journey with only 4 lakh volunteers in the beginning. Currently there are 42 lakh NSS volunteers across the country. The journey of NSS also started in 1976 in the state with only 600 volunteers from 6 universities of the state. At present there are 379 NSS units in the state. The number of volunteers is 34 thousand 300 people, he added.

Reiterating the government’s steps towards making Tripura a ‘Drug-Free State’, Dr Saha said that there shall be no compromise in this work. The government is taking a strict stand to protect the future generation of children from addiction and success is achieved in this work. Apart from this, awareness programs are being organized to bring back the addicts to their normal life. The Chief Minister called upon the NSS volunteers to pledge their support to the state government for the creation of a drug-free Tripura. The Chief Minister said that NSS volunteers are also working to bring various programs of the state government to the common people and to make people aware.

The programme was attended by Youth Affairs and Sports minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Secretary Dr Pradeep Chakraborty, Director Shubikash Debbarma, Director of Sramik Kalyan Board Retired Brigadier JP Tiwari, State Program Officer of NMHP Dr Udayan Majumdar and state NSS officer Dr Chitrajit Bhowmik.

In this event, best 10 NSS Program Officers, best 10 NSS Units and 30 NSS Volunteers of the state were awarded this year for outstanding excellence in NSS programs during 2021-22. Moreover, On behalf of Tripura State NSS Cell, a cheque of Rs 1,20,602 was handed over to the Tripura Sramik Kalyan Board by the Chief Minister to Retired Brigadier JP Tiwari’s hand.
