Flood Fury Claims Over 4,200 Lives In Assam And West Bengal Since 2002: Government

Guwahati, July 28, 2023: The government shared alarming statistics in response to a query in the Lok Sabha, indicating that over 4,200 lives have been lost in floods in Assam and West Bengal since 2002.

The data also highlights the extensive economic impact, with the total damage caused by the floods in these two states amounting to a staggering Rs 80,000 crore since 2002, in a response to a Lok Sabha query union minister of state for Jal Shakti Bishweswa Tudu revealed.

The devastating floods took a toll of 1,500 lives in Assam, while in West Bengal, the situation has been even more tragic with 2,722 people losing their lives during the same period.

Economically, West Bengal has borne the brunt of the floods with a loss of Rs 64,726 crore, while Assam also suffered significant damage amounting to Rs 16,346 crore since 2002. The scale of the toll and damage underscores the urgency of finding effective measures to address the recurring floods in the region.
