Tripura is set to begin electric train operations by February 2025, marking a significant step in the state’s transportation infrastructure. The move follows the completion of a major electrification project, which aims to replace the current diesel-powered trains with electric engines.
The Rs 46-crore electrification initiative, launched in 2022, will connect Tripura to the national railway grid. Officials from the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) confirmed that they will be ready to supply power to the railway’s electric transmission lines by February.
The North Eastern Railways (NFR) has already completed electrification from Badarpur to Agartala, including the Dharmanagar section. As part of the project, three new traction power substations are being set up in Unakoti, Khowai, and Gomati districts. While the Kumarghat substation was completed in March 2024, the Udaipur substation will be finished this month, and the Teliamura substation is expected to be ready by February 2025.
Once operational, TSECL will energize the electric transmission lines, allowing the Railways to start electric train services. The Railways have requested 5 MW of power daily for each substation, with additional power available if required.
The new electric trains are expected to enhance travel efficiency, improve transportation infrastructure, and contribute to the state’s economic growth. Efforts are also ongoing to complete the electrification of the remaining stretch of the Lumding-Badarpur section.
