The Transport Department, Government of Manipur, on Monday inaugurated a three-day refresher course for Manipur State Transport (MST) drivers and conductors at the Conference Hall of the Institute of Drivers Training and Research Centre (IDTRC), Top Dussara, Imphal East.

Additional Chief Secretary (Transport/TCI) and PCCF & HoFF, Anurag Bajpai, IFS, said the programme reflects the Government’s strong commitment to strengthening the foundations of public transport in the state. He said public buses remain one of the most affordable and widely used modes of transport and informed that MST services are being prepared to restart routes after a gap of several years, making refresher training necessary due to evolving systems, technology and public expectations.

Highlighting the importance of safety, Bajpai said the training is designed to promote safe and defensive driving, emergency response and responsible passenger management. He stressed that Manipur’s challenging terrain, narrow and hilly roads, sharp bends and unpredictable weather conditions make specialised training essential, particularly during the rainy season.

He added that MST buses serve remote and hill districts and are a lifeline for students, elderly citizens, vendors and daily wage earners. As road infrastructure and transport networks expand, he said staff must be prepared to handle new routes and modern systems, including GPS-based fleet monitoring, automated ticketing and electric buses.

Delivering the keynote address, Director of Transport, Khumanthem Diana Devi, described drivers and conductors as the backbone of Manipur’s public transport system and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving connectivity. She said new bus routes are being planned to enhance accessibility across the state and urged participants to make full use of the training.

The programme includes technical sessions on traffic regulations, motor vehicle mechanisms and road safety, conducted by senior transport officials. The inaugural event was attended by Deputy Director (Transport) Samson Huidrom, departmental staff, drivers, conductors and other officials.
