The 34th Manipuri Language Day (Manipuri Lon-Gi Numit) was observed today across Manipur with a series of programmes organised by various organisations and institutions to honour and promote the rich heritage of the Manipuri language.
At Loktak Hall of the Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul, the observance was organised by Wakhallon Mannaba Apunba (WAMA) Kangleipak. The function was graced by BOSEM Chairman Akham Joykumar, WAMA President Moirangthem Naokhamba Meetei, senior WAMA office bearers Naroijam Tomba and Dr. Waikhom Romesh, Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board Member Secretary Sivadutta Luwang, HERICOUN President Yumkhaibam Surjitkumar Khuman, and All Manipur Recognise Private School Welfare Association President Laishram Joy Khuman.
Another observance was held at the Hall of Grace Cottage Cultural and Educational Development Foundation, Kakching, organised by Macha Chanu Kakching. Former president of Sahitya Seva Samiti Kakching, Kengba Yengkhom, attended as Chief Guest, while Dr. Nongmaithem Pramodini, President of Macha Chanu Kakching, presided over the programme. Sahitya Seva Samiti Secretary Ksh. Joykumar attended as Guest of Honour. The event featured a lecture by N. Birohini on the theme “Manipuri Lon Da Pirakpa Cheitheng”, along with poetry recitals presented by students of Grace Cottage Academy.
Meanwhile, CI College, Bishnupur, also observed the day with a solemn programme held at its Conference Hall. Principal Professor Dr. RK Rajeshwari graced the event as Chief Guest, alongside Associate Professor Dr. Th. Nando (Head of Physics), Dr. Ch. Sharat (Head of Economics), and Dr. Nivanonee (IQAC Coordinator). In her address, Dr. Rajeshwari highlighted that the inclusion of Manipuri in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution was a landmark achievement, as it conferred official recognition and enabled students to opt for Manipuri in competitive examinations. She further reminded that Language Day is also about remembering the sacrifices and collective struggles of those who made the recognition possible.
Head of the Manipuri Department, Dr. Ch. Kiranbala, also spoke, describing Manipuri as one of the world’s ancient languages with a vast body of literature and vocabulary, underscoring the importance of preserving and nurturing it for future generations.
