Itanagar, Nov 24: The Arunachal Pradesh government has filed for Geographical Indication (GI) registration for 10 indigenous agricultural products, including Bagra pineapple, Pasighat jaggery, and Baali rice. This marks the highest number of GI filings done simultaneously in the state’s history, said Egam Basar, Director of the State Horticulture Research and Development Institute (SHRDI).
Other products included in the application are Idu Yamba (finger millet), Angpu pumpkin, Mipun rice, Libi Balangbu white rajma, Bebo large cardamom, cinnamon, and Andoye kidney bean. The process is being actively supported by GI expert Padma Dr. Rajnikant from the Human Welfare Association.
Basar added that another 10 products will be filed within a week, aiming to achieve a total of 20 new GI registrations soon. This initiative is part of the state government’s commitment announced during the GI Mahotsav 2025 to secure at least 50 GI tags by 2029.
Currently, Arunachal Pradesh has 20 products registered and 34 more in the pipeline, including Wakro orange, Adi Kekir ginger, Khaw Tai rice, Yak Churpi, Singpho tea, various millets, along with textiles, handicrafts, and beverages.
The GI initiative is intended to protect the state’s indigenous agricultural heritage, promote local products, and support farming communities by preserving traditional knowledge, Basar said. This move reinforces Arunachal Pradesh’s focus on heritage conservation and economic empowerment through unique regional products.
