Arunachal Pradesh: Tawang Erupts In Protest Demanding Justice For Lumla Minor Rape Case

Itanagar, April 30: Tawang witnessed a massive protest rally today as more than 1,500 people marched in solidarity with a minor girl from Lumla who was allegedly raped by seven non-tribal men. The peaceful demonstration, led by Lumla MLA Tsering Lhamu and ZPM Sonam Nordzin, began at Dungyur Mani in Old Market and proceeded through New Market before concluding at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office.

Students, teachers, taxi unions, bazaar committees, and community groups joined the rally, demanding strict action and a speedy trial. Appeals were submitted to the district administration urging immediate intervention in the case.

According to officials, an FIR was lodged on March 23, 2026, by Nima Yangzom Lhou against Rikap Jyuti Pachani in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a minor girl aged nine at the time of the incident. The complaint stated that the crime occurred nearly two years ago and involved multiple accused.

Tawang Superintendent of Police Tasi Darang confirmed that three individuals have been detained so far, with investigations revealing a total of seven accused persons. Of these, two have been identified as directly involved, while one individual could not be recognized by the survivor due to the time gap since the incident.

The SP emphasized that the case has been accorded top priority by Tawang Police, assuring that all necessary steps are being taken with seriousness and sensitivity to ensure justice for the victim and her family.
