TRIHMS Conducts First Interventional Radiology Procedure In Arunachal

In a first for Arunachal Pradesh, the Tomo Riba Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) has successfully performed an interventional radiology (IR) procedure to treat a renal artery pseudoaneurysm. The milestone expands the institute’s capacity for advanced, minimally invasive treatment, an official release said.

A team led by Dr Wangju Sumnyan of the radiology department carried out the procedure, working closely with the cardiology and urology departments.

The 40-year-old female patient had suffered an injury to the left renal artery following kidney stone surgery, which led to pseudoaneurysm formation. She was admitted with severe pain and blood in urine.

Doctors used endovascular coil embolisation, a minimally invasive technique, to treat the condition. Two small metallic coils were placed to seal the bleeding artery through a puncture in the groin, avoiding open surgery. The patient is now stable and recovering well.

TRIHMS termed the success a major step forward for healthcare in Arunachal. The institute noted that image-guided interventions provide safer, faster, organ-preserving options compared to conventional surgery.

Dr Sumnyan, deputy medical superintendent and radiology HoD, said the achievement shows TRIHMS’ growing capability in advanced medical technology. He added that setting up a dedicated IR cath-lab would help bring world-class care to people in the state.

He said IR services will strengthen TRIHMS’ ability to handle complex emergencies like internal bleeding, vascular injuries, and tumor embolisation, with reduced recovery time and fewer complications.

Backed by public support and the state government, TRIHMS said it is moving towards its goal of becoming a leading medical institution in the Northeast.
