Guwahati, Nov 25: The Assam government on Tuesday distributed printed copies of the Tewary Commission report in the state Assembly on the first day of the Winter Session. The report pertains to the 1983 Nellie massacre and the large-scale violence that occurred across the state that year.

MLAs found copies of the report placed on their desks during the proceedings. The Commission of Enquiry on Assam Disturbances, 1983, headed by retired IAS officer T. P. Tewary, was constituted on July 14, 1983, to investigate incidents of violence throughout the state. The panel submitted its final report to the then Congress-led government in May 1984, and it was later tabled in the Assembly by the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) government in 1987.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier stated that copies of the report were not available to legislators, with only a single copy reportedly submitted to the Speaker. Following a recent Cabinet decision, the BJP-led government, with AGP as a coalition partner, has now circulated both hard and soft copies among the legislators during the ongoing session.

Sarma clarified that no discussion on the report will be held in the House.
